Day 1Becky Washing Dead RockEekie picks out the rock for her aquariumDead rock with spiders

Today I decided to set up Becky’s 36 gallon corner tank. I’m going to stock it with old dead rock from my Dad’s marine import business that’s been sitting out behind the shed for 5 years and see what I can make grow on the cheap.

This is what I had on hand:

  • 36 Gallon Aquarium, Stand, Cover and Light
  • Power Head
  • Heater

I went up to our local marine supplier for the following:

  • 30 gallons of salt water - $29
  • 12 Blue legged hermits - $16
  • Sand/Rubble sample - $9
  • 80 lbs of Aragonite - $80

Total - $134

The tank has been used for freshwater fish for a long time. I scrubbed the algae off the front and rinsed it out.

I filled the bottom of the tank with about 6 inches of aragonite.

After I filled the tank with salt water, Becky and I went to work on the old rock. This rock used to be high quality live rock, but a power outage killed it all, and it was relegated to a storage box in the shed. It sat there for about 8 years before we decided to dig it out and see what we could do with it.

It was covered with dirt and detritus. We used a brush and spray to clean it all up. We actually chased a group of 3 spiders out of the rock at one point.

I placed a bunch of the clean rock into the tank along with the sand sample, rubble, and Blue legged hermits when the temperature reached about 79.
